Sizing guide — Smythe & Digby

01Measure first

A Smythe & Digby branded Brannock foot measuring device

Get the size right before the cut.

Every pair is cut to the size and width you confirm, which is why we ask you to measure before you order. Ten minutes with a tape measure saves a remake. Here is how, then the charts.

Evening, both feetMeasure in the evening, when feet are at their largest. Measure both feet, standing, weight on. Most people have one longer foot. Order for that one.
LengthStand against a wall on paper, mark the tip of your longest toe, measure the distance to the wall. That number in inches is your foot length. Match it in the chart below.
WidthWrap the tape around the widest part of the forefoot, the ball, while standing. That girth tells you whether D, EE or EEE is yours. Compare against the width rows in the chart.
Between sizesChoose the larger. A half-size of room is comfort; a half-size short is a remake nobody wants.

02The charts

Find your length. Then your width.

Find your foot length in the chart, then read across for your width. Sizes run consistently across the collection; the one difference worth knowing is that each style carries its own exact range, which the studio shows at the size selection step before you order.

Girth figures are the standard ball-girth allowances for each width at that length, in inches. Each last carries its own fine calibration, which is why the studio shows the exact range for the style you choose. Widths D and EE where the style offers them; EEE in select styles. We do not make wider than EEE.

Widths, plainly

D — standardRegular ball girth. Most feet are D. If you have never needed a wide shoe, this is yours.
EE — US 2EWhat most American retailers call wide. Offered on most styles. If dress shoes regularly pinch across the ball, measure your girth against the EE column.
EEE — select stylesThe widest we make, on select lasts. If EE still pinches, compare your girth against the EEE column and look for the styles that carry it.
Confirm before the cut

Made to order · Measure both feet in the evening · Between sizes, choose the larger · Each style's exact size range appears at the size selection step in the studio, before your order is confirmed · A pair cut to your confirmed size and width cannot be exchanged or remade.
